In September, posters reading "MISSING: THE PLOT" started showing up around Charlotte. Each one carried a QR code. It led to a ransom-note page that told people to wear black to a Saturday-night "funeral" for a business name. CharlotteFive reported that the business was very much alive. Plot Twist, the coffee and cocktail bar on Lyon Court in Plaza Midwood, was turning into The Lost Plot.
The stunt was fun, but the problem behind it explains how this year's new places in NoDa and Plaza Midwood work. Several of them are built to be a coffee shop in the morning and a bar at night, all at one address. That gives you more ways to use one room. It also means the hour you show up decides which version of the place you get. And a spot that changes this much over a day needs people to know it's there at every hour.
A Garage Bar That Almost Got Lost
Plot Twist held its grand opening May 8 in a fully renovated garage shop at 1518 Lyon Ct., tucked behind Trope Bookshop and Wiloe Home & Gift. The menu is built around flavor profiles. Each one comes as a hot or cold coffee drink, a cocktail or a mocktail, so the same order works at 8 a.m. or 9 p.m.
When Axios Charlotte covered the opening in April, the schedule announced for after the cocktail launch ran from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. That's a 15-hour day, which only works if the room keeps a crowd through more than one meal.
In August, CharlotteFive reported, the shop lost its Instagram account and learned that a Texas book bar had already trademarked the Plot Twist name. With the old account gone, many people assumed the bar had closed. It hadn't. It still had a staff of 22.
Co-owner Nikki Velazquez explained the new name to CharlotteFive: "People refer to us as Plot. They say, 'I'm going to Plot. Come grab a drink at Plot.' And we don't have to remove Plot. Plot is still part of our name." Artist Carla Garrison-Mattos was scheduled to update the outside mural on Monday, Sept. 28.
A coffee shop that disappears from your feed is easy to forget. A coffee shop that's also your Friday cocktail bar and your Sunday afternoon table disappears from all three routines at once.
One Seat, Several Menus
The Lost Plot isn't alone. Four places that opened between April and September each change over in their own way, and the details matter if you're planning to go at a certain time.
| Spot | Address | By day | After dark | Posted hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Lost Plot | 1518 Lyon Ct., Plaza Midwood | Hot or cold coffee drinks | The same flavors as cocktails or mocktails | 7 or 8 a.m. to 9–11 p.m., per the schedule announced at launch |
| Goodyear Bar | 3024 N. Davidson St., NoDa | Night Swim Coffee espresso | Craft cocktails | Mon–Thu 8 a.m.–midnight, Fri–Sat 8 a.m.–1 a.m., Sun 9 a.m.–11 p.m. |
| Cafe Audire | 4090 Raleigh St., The Pass | Coffee, house-made syrups, vinyl | '60s- and '70s-style cocktail lounge | Weekdays 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m., then 6 p.m.–midnight; weekends vary |
| Postino Wine Cafe | 1606 Commonwealth Ave., Suite 101 | All-day boards, panini, salads | Wine, local beer, cocktails | 11 a.m.–11 p.m. on the day captured |
The table shows two different setups. The Lost Plot and Goodyear Bar run straight through the day. Cafe Audire closes between shifts.
The Three-Hour Gap at Cafe Audire
Cafe Audire opened in June at The Pass, a 12-acre mixed-use development near the Sugar Creek light rail station, and held its grand opening in July. QCity Metro's August visit describes a small, mid-century room with orange walls and records everywhere.
The daytime draw is the listening setup. Two record players have headphones attached. You can also rent a portable record player and headphones for your table and share it with up to four friends. The coffee menu includes the Americola, made with espresso, vanilla creamer and Coke, plus house-made ube, blueberry and raspberry syrups. QCity Metro also mentioned free parking and strong Wi-Fi.
On weekdays the coffee shop closes at 3 p.m. It reopens at 6 p.m. as a cocktail lounge with martinis and Manhattans, open until midnight. Weekend hours vary. If you show up at 4:30 with a laptop, the door will be locked. If you come back at 6:30, you'll find a different kind of room.
The shop has said it plans listening nights, record swaps and spoken-word performances. QCity Metro's August report didn't give dates for any of them. If you're waiting for one of those, the shop's own channels are the place to watch. Its neighbors at The Pass include Soul Gastrolounge, Borderline Bar & Billiards and The Dog's Club, so an early evening there can start somewhere else.
Goodyear Bar Added a Morning to a Cocktail Room
At 3024 N. Davidson St., the change happened at the address itself. CharlotteFive reported that Chief's Modern Cocktail Parlor held its last service on Sunday, Aug. 23. Chief's had opened in early 2025. Goodyear Bar opened in the same space four days later, on Thursday, Aug. 27.
The new bar sits right next door to The Goodyear House and works as an extension of the restaurant. Coffee and espresso come from Night Swim Coffee. In the evening, bar and event manager Lauren Long runs a cocktail list that includes espresso, chai and matcha martinis. Restaurant favorites like the shaken fry bag, the Goopy burger and the al pastor wings are on the menu too.
Chris Coleman, executive chef and partner at The Goodyear House, described the idea in a release quoted by CharlotteFive: "You can come in for coffee in the morning, stay for lunch, meet friends for a drink in the afternoon and come back for dinner or a late-night cocktail."
Chief's was an evening room. Goodyear Bar keeps the evening and adds a morning, with posted hours starting at 8 a.m. most days and running to 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The bar's website promotes a happy hour but doesn't list a time window. Some online listings give the address as 3032 N. Davidson. Local coverage uses 3024.
Commonwealth Covers the Day From Both Ends
On Commonwealth Avenue, two neighbors cover the day, one in the morning and one at night.
Maman opened at 1711 Commonwealth Ave. on May 20. It's a French-inspired café and bakery with espresso, tea, pastries, sandwiches and brunch. Maman's listed hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. Of all the spots here, it's the one that stays a daytime café.
Postino Wine Cafe picks up the later hours down the street. The Arizona company, which started in a 1940s-era post office, opened its 4,113-square-foot Plaza Midwood location on Monday, Sept. 21. It has an enclosed 1,060-square-foot patio, according to CharlotteFive. The menu runs all day, with bruschetta boards, soups, salads, panini and shareable plates like roasted mushroom fondue and seasonal burrata.
Postino's location page lists $6 select wines and beers every day. After 8 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, a bruschetta board and a bottle of wine are $25 together. The Postino Bottle Club, a monthly membership, gives you up to three bottles a month to drink while you dine.
Both sit in a stretch that keeps filling in. CharlotteFive lists Harriet's Hamburgers, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, Uchi and Uchibā, the new Improper Pig flagship and La Vecina among the other recent arrivals at the development. So a morning at Maman and a late Monday board at Postino are a short walk apart.
Before You Head Out
Most of the hours above are posted or reported hours, and newer places tend to adjust their schedules. A few things to know:
- The Lost Plot now posts on Instagram as @thelostplotclt. Its website link was still plottwistclt.com in late September coverage.
- Cafe Audire closes from 3 to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and its weekend hours vary.
- Goodyear Bar has the longest posted late-night hours in this group, open until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
- Maman closes at 6 p.m. every day.
- Postino's $25 board-and-bottle deal runs only on Mondays and Tuesdays after 8 p.m.
